Brave women and men also members of the association ALPADOC decided recently to get painted by Lynn Schockmel to express their pain and emotions thru Art.
ALPADOC is the Luxembourg Association of Chronic Pain Patients supporting patients and pleading for adequate management and the treatment of chronic pain in Luxembourg.

The art project

The association ALPADOC decided to build a perpetual calendar with different photos of 8 pain patients. Lynn Schockmel designed a few abstract but meaningful full and partial bodypaintings in different colors and patterns. Some patients were painted in black to express their lack of hope and pessimism. Black is often the symbol of negativsm, it hides but also covers. It can also be the color of Power. Some body parts were painted in different colors to bring out the part of their body which hurts the most, for example their arm or their leg. Red was used a lot to symbolize strong emotions like pain, danger, courage, strength, and power. Some patients were painted very colorful to symbolize mixed feelings like hope, strength, but also sensitivity and irritability.
All bodypainted patients were photographed by Marco Mazzini.

The goal of the art project

The goal of publishing a calendar is first of all public awareness. ALPADOC wants to send out the message that chronic pain disorders and their troubles are still not understood. This disease may affect anyone, from one day to the next. Permanent pain can cause depression and they can restrict mobility. Being ill does not mean that the person is no longer a human being. Pain patients, might have the same interests that healthy people want. They want to enjoy their family, work, friends and leisure activities. Daily life is a challenge for people with chronic pain and results to loneliness and isolation. Another goal of this project is to raise money to support all charity actions of the association.

Why bodypainting?

ALPADOC has choosen Bodypainting for their calendar because:
  • Pain is invisible
  • Pain can't be measured
  • Pain is not understood and therefore hidden
  • Pain may lead to depression or insensitivity
  • Pain may not be seen from the outside by body language or facial expression
  • Pain is difficult to describe
  • Pain may people feel trapped within their body, they loose control
  • Pain may be played down with the temptation to look happy
  • Pain lead people to play a different role in public, because they are often misunderstood
Bodypainting helps to express all those different statements and emotions.

In addition, body painting is an art form that enhances self-confidence. ALPADOC want to show with this campaign that everybody can participate in an art project like bodypainting:  all different body shapes, illnesses and pain patients... Everybody should feel beautiful and accepted.

A last reason to use bodypainting for this project was also to enjoy the moments and to have fun with the whole team. It clearly shows off in the pictures that the patients had fun and their life, despite their illness, is worth living with many joyful moments.
The project aims to encourage those affected not to give up. Pain patients deserve to live a happy life too.

How to buy and support the association?

The calendar consists of 12 sheets, one sheet per month, in DIN A3 format.
It's a perpetual calendar, because you can use it each year for an infinite time.
The calendar is sold together with a pencil and a clip to the day marker for 15 €.
